Modern Public Buildings in Memphis From 1940 to 1980
A survey of buildings, which will be presented at this meeting, was developed by Keith Kays, Lee Askew, Marty Gorman and Louis Pounders in response to a growing concern about the ongoing demolition of significant Modern buildings. The survey was developed as a pro-bono effort in the hope of enhancing the stature and understanding of Modern Architecture. The team initially identified, visited and photographed approximately 100 buildings and selected 82 as being representative of the decade by decade evolution of Modern Architecture in Memphis. The survey includes comments concerning the influence of early modernist architects, the evolution of architectural styles and the leaders of modernism in Memphis. The project descriptions are arranged chronologically and include photographs as well as written descriptions of the architectural concept and intrinsic value of each building. When complete the survey will be available through AIA Memphis.

A Journey into the “Poetry + Proof” of Design
presented by Thompson E. Penney, FAIA, LEED AP, 2003 AIA President
Sponsored in part by Askew Nixon Ferguson Architects
Penney shares his personal journey into his search for incorporating “proof” as to why Design Matters into the practice of architecture. His view is that the profession is on the cusp of a transformational era of practice where BIM, IPD, Neuroscience, Anthropology, Competitive Analytics, Evidence-Based Design and LEED are all converging to create opportunities for architects to truly become trusted and valued advisors to their clients.
