Bluebird of Happiness

artist statement
For me, I am happiest at home. My home is my workspace, my resting place, my nest for myself and my family. The door I chose appears to be an exterior door to someone’s home. The door they came in at the end of a day, the door the kids bolted through after school, the door that welcomed friends and family into the home. I began to strip the door, but then realized that much of its history lay in the layers of paint I uncovered. So I left some of the original paint and layers, and then carved the word HOME into the paint and the wood. I created the Bluebird with wood, acrylic and wax, and it perches on the door, waiting to go inside, or to welcome you home. The base is made of old cedar boards leftover from the fence at my own home. An old map covers the lid to the bench. Hopefully someone will welcome this bluebird into their own nest, to have children sit on its bench, look through it’s window, and hide treasures in it’s base.
