Francis Gassner Award Honors Jim Lutz

AIA Memphis was proud to honor architect, professor and advocate Jim Lutz with the Francis Gassner Award at the Celebration of Architecture Gala on April 12, 2008. This Award is the highest honor given by the Memphis Chapter of the American Institute of Architects to an architect or member of a related profession for outstanding contributions to the quality of the built environment in Memphis.
Jim is currently an assistant professor of architecture at the University of Memphis and over the past 5 years has made an amazing impact on the students and faculty. Not only a dedicated teacher, but also an activist in our community, Jim has done much to change the face of our city and to improve the built environment.
Whether through his service on community Boards including UrbanArt Commission, Memphis Heritage and the US Green Building Council Memphis Regional Chapter, or through his countless volunteer service with the AIA Memphis chapter directly as co-organizer of the Discovering Architecture Summer Camp, co-chair of the Design Awards Program, active member of many Architecture Month committees in addition to those above and many more not mentioned, he has always strived to improve our community now and in the future.
The Francis Gassner Award was established in 1977 to commemorate an extraordinary architect, Francis P. Gassner, who practiced in Memphis from the Fifties until his death in 1977. To continue his legacy of design excellence, of service to the profession, and of leadership to our community. Candidates are proposed annually by any member of AIA Memphis in good standing for achievements in any of the following categories: Architectural Practice, Design, Education, Government, Industry, Historical Preservation, Literature, Public Service, Research, Science of Construction, Service to the Profession, Urban Design.

University of Memphis Architecture Student Awarded 2008
Francis Mah Travel Grant AIA

At a reception hosted at one of architect Francis Mah’s first residential designs in Memphis, AIA Memphis Board members, architects, faculty, students and members joined to honor the legacy of Mah’s work and hear from David Mah on the 2008 selected candidate for the Francis Mah Travel Grant. This year’s grant was awarded to Architecture Student Linda Suhajdova whose submission entitled “The effect of Mega Cities: Guiding Healthy Growth of our Communities” outlined plans to work directly with the Mega Cities Project in Mexico providing opportunities for research, community service, and further dialogue upon her return to Memphis following her travels. The Mega Cities Project is a transnational, non-profit network of leaders from government, business, non-profits, grassroots groups, academia and media, dedicated to sharing innovative solutions to the problems they face in common. Since 1987, they have established research/action teams in 21 of the world's largest cities.

In remembrance of the life and work of Francis Mah, AIA Memphis annually offers this traveling fellowship funded jointly by the Mah Family and TRO Jung/Brannen, for the purpose of advancing the educational experience of a young prospective Architect. The focus each year is to identify potential future design leaders and encourage further research and exploration in various areas of design study. The Grant may be used for travel anywhere in the world. Due to the generous support of The Mah Family, TRO Jung/Brannen, AIA Memphis and the Architecture Program at the University of Memphis who presented a gift in honor of Jim Lutz, the 2008 Mah Travel Grant was awarded at $3,000.

Qualified applicants include: persons employed in the architectural profession, working towards future registration as an architect, and who are Associate Members of AIA Memphis; students enrolled in the architecture program at the University of Memphis who will have completed their third or fourth year by the summer of 2008; students enrolled in the architecture program at Mississippi State who will have completed their fourth or fifth year by the summer of 2008. For more information on this annual Grant, please contact AIA Memphis.
