Our DJ, Jared "Jay B." Boyd

is a multimedia journalist, artist, humorist, DJ and on-air personality.

The Memphis native currently serves as program manager for WYXR 91.7 FM, while also working as a columnist for The Daily Memphian. Along with extensive articles on Memphis’ musical history and its momentum forward, Boyd composer liner notes for the 2020 release of “The Gospel Truth: Complete Singles Collection,” an anthology of recordings from Stax Records’ gospel subsidiary.

The list of artists profiled and interviewed for works in Boyd’s short career span genres and generations, with a specific focus on the oral history Memphis’ recording and performing industry, including Booker T. Jones, Yo Gotti, Anita Ward, Shirley Brown, and Don Bryant.

On-air, Boyd co-hosts and writes long running roots music program, “Beale St. Caravan,” which is syndicated globally via National Public Radio. Behind two turntables, the avid record collector is committed to the preservation of Memphis artists’ legacies through sharing their sounds with new listeners. Aside from weekly mixes on local radio, he played an instrumental role in programming the music of Downtown Memphis’ Central Station Hotel, playing Bluff City music for guests, upon the opening of the Eight & Sound lounge in 2019.

Summer Salon is sponsored in part by the University of Memphis Department of Architecture whose Lecture Series is funded in part by a grant from the Tennessee Board of Architectural and Engineering Examiners. Partners in the lecture series are the Department of Architecture, UofM AIAS, AIA Memphis, and NOMA Memphis.
