Charlie O'Geen

Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University

(MArch Faculty Member)

Charlie O’Geen is currently an Assistant Professor of Architecture at Kendall College of Art and Design. His work investigates the exploitation of existing site conditions for use as building systems, in opposition to conventional building practices which are materially consuming. Unconventionally, O’Geen’s work moves off paper and into the full-scale realities of site and material, and looks to expose and explore the opportunities of existing material energy. Rather than starting with the formal visual properties of design, O’Geen’s process weighs the potential of conditions already present at the building site, creating experiments that develop fully mature material systems that grow from untapped resources in sites and materials.

He received his Master of Architecture from The University of Illinois at Chicago and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture for Lawrence Technological University. Central Station Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton

Opened on October 4, 1914, Grand Central Station was built by the Illinois Central Railroad for $1.5 million. It served the Illinois Central, Yazoo and Mississippi Valley, Rock Island and Frisco Lines, resulting in an economic boom for the area until the late 1960s when train travel began to dramatically decline. The building fell into disrepair until 1995 when the Memphis Transit Authority invested $20 million towards its renovation.

In 2020, AIA Memphis awarded Bounds & Gillespie   LRK with a Design Merit Award for their work to renovate and restore this South Main icon and breathe new life into its future.  Read more about the project and view photography from the award entry at https://www.aiamemphis.org/bldg_detail/central_station.
