In December 2022, the CBS-TV series, America by Design: Architecture, announced the winner of Season 1: the Marine Education Center at the University of Southern Mississippi. Designed by Lake | Flato in association with unabridged Architecture, the Center exemplifies the principles of AIA’s Framework for Design Excellence, a structured method to assure architectural design contributes positively not just to the client but also to communities, economies and ecosystems.

As an active member of the AIA National Committee on Climate Action & Design Excellence (CCADE), Allison brings unique insight about the Framework’s intent.

Join us for the conversation!

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the relationship between design excellence and climate action.
How are climate action and design excellence inextricably linked? Through the Framework for Design Excellence, ten principles which represent the foundational message of the profession - that good design in not just good for one client in the immediate timeframe, but good for communities, economies, and ecosystems.

  • Understand why the four outcomes of the AIA Climate Action plan - zero-carbon, resilient, equitable, and healthy - were selected and explore how these are integrated into the Framework.
  • Zero-carbon: buildings contribute nearly 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The solution is to reduce resource use and total carbon, both operational and embodied.
  • Resilient: the growing number of disasters threaten people and their biggest investments - real estate. The F4DE can guide architects to better adaptation for an extended service life.
  • Equitable: increasing divisions between people and a disproportionate burden on the most vulnerable populations strains energy, transportation, financial, and other systems. Good design creates spaces for social interaction and repairs inequities in the built environment.
  • Healthy: environmental issues diminish life expectancy and cause permanent impacts to built and natural systems. Good architecture influences physical and mental well-being, inspires activity, and creates better indoor environments.

  • Explore the ten principles in the Framework for Design Excellence.
Hear a thorough analysis of the Marine Education Center, winner of the CBS-TV Show America by Design: Architecture, the COTE Top Ten Award 2020 and the AIA Honor Award 2022.

  • Recognize how firms can integrate the Framework for Design Excellence into their practice throughout the design process to elevate health and safety considerations.
  • PreDesign: Site and program analysis
  •    Goal-setting/Owner's Project Requirements
  •    Integrated Project Delivery: team selection
  • Schematic Design: materials selection, orientation/form
  • Design Development, Construction Documentation: energy modeling, product specifications, detailing to support goals
  • Bid/Permitting: contractor on-boarding, advocacy with the AHJ
  • Construction Administration: tracking, verifying, testing
  • Post Occupancy Evaluation: assessment, lessons for the next project
