A new headquarters building for a locally-owned intermodal logistics company provides space for expansion and consolidation as well as access to natural daylight and high-energy collaboration spaces to build community among employees.

Faced with a rapidly growing logistics business, IMC Companies needed a larger space to bring all corporate employees under one roof, recruit young talent, and build community among departments that were once spread across multiple offices throughout the city. The new 3-story, 75,000 SF building serves a team of 400 professionals across 7 companies that manages the largest fleet of trucks and integrated smart depots in the country.

The building interior was designed with a focus on collaboration, access to daylight, and creating a welcoming space for employees, visitors, and the community. The layering of spaces and creative placement of glazing allow nodes of collaboration to be interspersed within departmental areas while also maintaining both a visual connection to the exterior and generous access to natural daylight. A large first floor training room provides a flexible space for numerous uses ranging from employee training and company meetings to community events. Generous glazing and convenient access to additional gathering areas on the patio provide a strong connection to the exterior. On the upper floors, breakout rooms of various sizes allowing for simultaneous meetings flank the collaboration space and monumental stairs at the core of the building. Alignment of the monumental stairs and glazing in the conference rooms allow views and natural daylight to penetrate deep into the building footprint.

The finishes throughout the building were selected to provide an elevated, welcoming experience for employees and guests while providing a high degree of cleanability in the post-COVID office environment. Creative uses of felt, perforated metal ceilings and blades, and acoustical gypsum board balance acoustics while enhancing the architectural character of the spaces. Custom wood panels are used throughout the building to bring warmth and sophistication to the spaces as well as to unite the multiple floors and departments with a consistent design language. Blown glass lights and custom chandeliers are paired with standard commercial light fixtures to heighten the welcoming, hospitality-style feel. The company’s subtle approach to branding was integrated into the interior design through art and hints to roadways in the carpet and lighting designs. More overt branding is integrated through custom wall graphics and paint colors as well as a custom-built table designed to mimic a truck chassis.
