A long-shuttered school is transformed into an inspirational beacon for the community and an educational portal for student achievement.

JCM driving principles placed Design for Integration front and center in the projects careful balance of enhanced classroom learning while celebrating the arts and athletics. The project brings back the pride of JCM long cherished the diverse and vibrant community. The project which took many years in the making, culminated in this transformational school. The extensive renovations serve to strengthens this pivotal anchor while an aging campus was restored to its historic grandeur. JCM Design for Equitable Communities stands as a beacon to the community and an educational portal and economic incubator for the future.

The iconic entry celebrates the historic past of the school while heralding a new era. The central gathering space leads through a symbolic gateway to a collaboration space with expansive views to nature and the orchard beyond. Collaboration space spills out in all directions, giving way to a series of portals, bold moments syncopating through the light-filled corridors. This new pattern of hall and portals provides a common language and rhythm: overarching structure to the series of additions and wings added over many decades.

Design for Wellness strategies informed the decision to pull back the heavy drapes, aged and boarded-over windows and bring in the light. The design team collaborated on a multi-disciplinary approach to expose the structure, streamline building systems, and maximize ceiling heights. Natural light and views, fresh attention to outdoor spaces and connectivity are key to improved well-being, creativity, and learning focus.
