A rural town with many newcomers requests the creation of a small contemporary pavilion in an existing park. Knitting the pavilion into the town's historic character will create a sensitive Town archetype that can inspire future master plan development.

The park needs a setting that invites gatherings of townsfolk for day and night, organized and impromptu, social and recreational uses, with concessions, toilets, and equipment storage. Town desires to affirm its own small Historic District and buildings.

Design approach
Complement, not replicate, the town’s historic buildings – built late 1800s to early 1900s in a variety of types and styles that demonstrated changing taste and technologies. Reference the Town’s historic building materials, forms, and details to compose a pavilion that can resonate with townsfolk – and newcomers – feeling familiar yet contemporary.
• Materials: Natural woods, concrete, steel, brick
• Forms: Gabled roof, corrugation, overhang, rolling door, building on raised concrete (originally for wagons, trains)
• Details: Exposed connections, ubiquitous seating, gutter outlet

Design
Wide roof overhangs echo the sun and rain shelters of the Train Depot, Murray Cotton Gin, and S.Y. Wilson General Store
Corrugated textures in dark gray brick soldier coursing and galvanized roofing
Rolling barn doors to secure concessions
Raised concrete footing seating for people-watching from inside and outside (loose tables, seats are being purchased)
Tongue and groove cedar siding stained green similar to original Train Depot
Natural columns, trusses, and roof deck visibly continue through all areas
Horizontal wood lattice screens toilet entrances
Town Gathering Area
• Open on 3 sides to attract attention and enhance familiarity of passersby
• Up/down lighting to illuminate people and structure
• At pavilion south end for sun and visibility from road and driveway to other park features

Interiors
Exposed pine siding/roof decking, fir trusses, black steel & aluminum, porcelain wall tile, sealed concrete floors.

Construction
• Floor/Footings: Concrete, clear sealed
• Trusses/Columns: Custom site-built, Douglas Fir, clear-coated
• Roof Deck: Exposed 3½ inch tongue & groove pine, clear-coated
• Roofing: Corrugated Galvalume in lieu of historic tin
• Light Fixtures/Windows/Accessories: Black steel and aluminum
• Privacy Screen, at toilet entry: Douglas Fir, steel
