In this lecture, we will present case studies of previous structural failures of buildings and bridges due to combinations of causes. We will highlight cases where the decisions made during the design process have contributed to such failures. Finally, lessons learned from failure will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand causes of structural failures.
  • Identify structural engineering challenges due to complex architectural design.
  • Learn more about failures due to design errors, defective construction, material deficiencies, excessive loading, improper usage or modification, deterioration and degradation, and combination of causes.
  • Learn more about the importance of passing certain critical information to the engineer of record and the contractor through documented communications during the design, construction, and post-construction phases.

Dr. Adel E. Abdelnaby holds a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2012). He has been on the faculty of the Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Memphis since the fall of 2012. He has more than seventeen years of experience in the field of failure analysis of buildings and bridges. His professional experience includes working as a consultant on projects related to building enclosure, forensic analysis, litigation support, restoration, and renovation work. He is proficient in performing experimental and numerical simulations utilizing state-of-the-art laboratory testing equipment and advanced finite element methods to investigate the failure behavior of highly complex structural systems. He has assessed, repaired, and designed high-profile structures in the US and overseas.

Dr. Abdelnaby is also a frequent guest speaker at failure analysis related symposiums. He spoke to national and international audiences on multiple structural engineering topics and has authored numerous technical articles related to structural engineering. In addition, Adel has extensive knowledge of current structural engineering design and assessment codes and standards, including the International Residential and Building Codes, ASCE 7-16, ACI 318-14, AISC Manual and Specifications, NDS 2018, TMS 402/602, and AASHTO.
