Released in 2010, A Survey of Modern Public Buildings in Memphis, Tennessee From 1940 to 1980 and A Survey of Modern Homes in Memphis, Tennessee From 1940 to 1980 were the result of a growing concern within the Memphis design profession and preservation organizations that the buildings constructed between 1940 and 1980 are under appreciated and falling victim to demolition. The purpose of the surveys was to provide a context for understanding modernism, to document examples of modern buildings in Memphis, and to describe the basis of the design concept embodied within each building.

These informative guides caught the eye of a local realtor, Margaret Mikkelsen, and have been a priceless resource as she promotes Modern structures throughout the city. She purchased her home after seeing it in the Survey and now educates buyers about the proper preservation processes to save these midcentury treasures.

On October 30, AIA Memphis will host a home tour of 3 residences as a part of the 2021 memMOD event. Join us as we hear from the authors about these architectural icons and the professionals who dreamed them including Alfred Aydelott, Francis Gassner, Mel O'Brien, Francis Mah, and more.
